Whole House FansIn the summer in Colorado it cools quickly as the sun sets. Whole House fans take advantage of this to cool your home quickly in the evening. Whole House fans are installed in the ceiling in a central location. When the fan is turned on it pulls the hot air out of the house and blows it into the attic. They move a lot of air and require substantial attic ventilation so all the hot air can get out of the attic. As an advantage, the large amount of attic ventilation helps keep the attic as cool as possible and so helps keep the house cool. However, a whole house fan can lose a lot of energy from the home. The shutters on most fans do not make an airtight seal. Warm air escapes in the winter and cool air escapes in the summer. Also, there is no insulation above the fan. When our energy efficiency partners perform energy audits on homes, they often find the whole house fan is the largest point of heat loss in the home. Energy-efficient, low-noise fans are now available to solve these problems. While they have not been on the market as long as traditional whole house fans, they have been around long enough to have proven their reliability and effectiveness. In the last few years, Vent Masters has over installed over 100 of the newer, modern fans without problem. All of these installations include an R-14 winterization pad. Please be aware, some installers will only install a few large vents for exhaust ventilation. Vent Masters will install both rooftop and soffit vents so that your attic will stay as cool as possible even when the fan is not running. Prices and specifications are listed on the Products & Prices page.

The fan is mounted several feet away from the intake grille which makes it more quiet. The internal dampers close when the fan is not running. The QC-1500 moves 1527 cfm at a near silent 0.4 sones. The QC-2250 moves 2285 cfm for a whisper quiet 0.7 sones. The QC-4500 "Quiet Giant" is a two speed fan that moves 4534 cfm at a surprisingly quiet 0.7 sones. Other models are available. For more information click here. The Quietcool website is at www.QC-mfg.com Traditional Whole House Fans Traditional whole house fans are very effective but somewhat old fashioned. They have shutters that open when the fan is on and close when it is off. Direct drive fans have the fan attached to the motor. They are usually available in two sizes. A 24" fan moves about 4500 cfm (cubic feet per minute) of air which is for homes of 1000 to 3000 sf (square feet). A 30" fan moves about 6000 cfm and is for homes of 1260 to 3800 sf. Many times a 36" fan is installed in a smaller home and the homeowner is told to run it on low. When home energy audits are done, quite often a traditional whole house fan is the largest source of heat loss in the winter. These fans must be winterized by adding a moisture barrier and insulation. Vent Masters can remove your existing old fashioned fan and replace it with a modern, quiet and energy efficient model.
