Whole House Fans

In the summer in Colorado it cools quickly as the sun sets. Whole House fans take advantage of this to cool your home quickly in the evening. Whole House fans are installed in the ceiling in a central location. When the fan is turned on it pulls the hot air out of the house and blows it into the attic. They move a lot of air and require substantial attic ventilation so all the hot air can get out of the attic. As an advantage, the large amount of attic ventilation helps keep the attic as cool as possible and so helps keep the house cool.

Different types and sizes of fans are available, as well as deluxe models that have insulated, motorized doors and even remote controls.

The size of the fan required is determined by the size of the home.

Traditional Whole House Fans
Traditional whole house fans are very effective. They have shutters that open when the fan is on and close when it is off. Direct drive fans have the fan attached to the motor.  They are usually available in two sizes. A 24" fan moves about 4500 cfm (cubic feet per minute) of air which is for homes up to around 2500 sf (square feet). A 30" fan moves about 6000 cfm and is for homes over 2500 sf.

Belt drive fans are often quieter than direct drive fans. These fans are usually for homes of more than 2500 sf. These fans have 4, 5, or 6 blades so the fan can be sized to your home. These fans are supplied with a two speed wall switch.

Optional accessories for whole house fans include 12 hour timers and variable speed controllers.

Extra quiet whole house fans are another option. They are smaller and more expensive but they are  quiet and more energy efficient. Most have multiple speeds, and remote controls are options.

Please note, a few of the whole house fans advertised as being low noise have a high pitched whine and are actually very noisy.

Energy Efficiency
Because there is no insulation over traditional whole house fans, heat can be lost in the winter. Insulation blankets can be placed over the fans in the winter to minimize this heat loss.
Vent Masters sells winterization kits for a reasonable price.
Free winterization kits are included with some installations.

The cost of a whole house fan installation will vary depending on the amount of attic ventilation needed and the difficulty of the installation.

AVERAGE COSTS:

A 24" whole house fan installed will cost between $800 and $1,000.
A 4 blade 30" belt drive whole house fan installed will cost between $1,000 and $1,500.
The AirScapes installed cost between $1,000 and $1,600.

This includes all materials and labor, electrical work by a licensed electrician, and attic ventilation.

Please be aware, some installers will only install a few large vents for exhaust ventilation. Vent Masters will install both rooftop and soffit vents so that your attic will stay as cool as possible even when the fan is not running.
